All Request Weekend continues, this time with a great Joe Sinnott S/F classic from the June 1954 issue of Adventures into Weird Worlds #30, (the very LAST issue of AIWW in fact) as suggested by THOIA reader Robert Susor. Also, Robert is looking for another Atlas tale but cannot remember the name of it. Does anyone have any clues? Here’s what he does know: “Two thieves, one a dwarf, have a robot (looks like Gort). The dwarf gets inside it and goes on a robbery spree. It may have been in Marvel Tales…”
Boy, I'll bet that their faces were red when they figured-out what had really happened!
ReplyDeletei like the Martian's Santa pants, and the Venusians were straight out of a Kikaida episode! and it figures the Earth ship would throw a rod on the big day...
ReplyDeleteThis whole story is kinda like a long, drawn out Three Stooges bit, where Larry ducks and Moe hits Curly by accident, but then Curly and Moe then go and clobber Larry worse. Still, hilarious! Love the art. Sinnott could cook when he wanted to, and his Venusian designs are inspired... in a goofy way, of course.
ReplyDeleteStupid Earthlings should've told the Martians that the Venusians were coming to the meeting, too, and vice versa.
ReplyDeleteBut I really dug this tale. The alien designs were quite original in a bizarre kind of way. Also, I think this was actually a realistic depiction of how the first contact between two entirely different intelligent life forms could go.
I'm just sort of surprised they both showed up on the same moon. I mean, the Venusians are telepathic, sure, but how exactly did the Martians know which moon we'd really meant?
ReplyDeleteAnd is the irony supposed to come from our sense of Earthly hubris? Man oh man, if we'd only been there too, why then we'd have been intergalactically goodlookin' enough to stop those alien weirdos from hating us on sight. Is it all supposed to be a misunderstanding? I think it was a set-up! Since when does a culture on the cusp of manned spaceflight have, you know, war fleets just standing by?
As good as any Weird Science/Weird Fantasy story. An undiscovered gem.
ReplyDeleteGreat little story! Almost looks like Ditko's art even though it's Sinnot.
ReplyDeleteHope everyone enjoyed this All Request Weekend, thanks again to Emby and Robert for a couple great story suggestions too. As mentioned, tomorrow we kick off an entire week of Web of Evil stories, with the first four days spotlighting THOIA favorite, Jack Cole! Don't miss a day...
ReplyDeleteGREAT STORY TODAY, THANKS KARS AND ROBERT! SINNOTT DID AN AMAZING JOB HERE WITH CREATIONS ALMOST MORE HIDEOUS THAN SOMETHING WOLVERTON WOULD HAVE COME UP WITH!! AWESOME.
ReplyDeleteFOUR DAYS OF JACK COLE......... YOUR SPOILING US MAN!!!!!!
Re: Robert Susor's issue
ReplyDeletePossibly he means Journey Into Mystery I#17 (Aug, 1954) "The Thing That Walked"
