Time for the wrap up to our WoE theme this week, and this one is from the February 1954 issue of Web of Evil #11 (art by Reed Crandall maybe?) [now thought to be Charles Nicholas -- Nequam] I hope everyone enjoyed this look at a much underrated pre-code horror series.
Wow, two days left in March… man, where did this month go??!
I guess i wasn't paying attention to the splash, because that "bowling team" comment really threw me -- until I saw the ending. I mean, death by cleaver is one thing, but by bowling ball? Quite another. And milk bottles? Even better.
ReplyDelete"Morzat" indeed. Where's "Barhms" hiding out?
And I would have to say that the art is not by Reed Crandall.
oh goody! i get to be the first one to confess that i did not know the word "sculpture" was a verb as well as a noun!
ReplyDeleteNow! Fall Off The Roof And Break Something Besides Your Leonardo Da Vinci Flying Wings!
MASTER!!!...
Wow. Check out that middle frame on page three. That is one head-turning crowd. Besides the town dandy in his little hat and the butcher with his little rolling pin, Milkman Dan is there, rioting left-handed while holding glass milk jugs in his right. Also, is that the Sandman in the back of the group? Just behind Little Red Riding Hood (with a basketful of granny's liquid lunch)?
ReplyDeleteThis story's Milkman is a constant puzzler to me, though. First, this feat of rioting. Later, he is shown collecting the bodies of the serial victims in his milk cart. Still later, he has already apparently been killed and sculpturized, again, milk and all. What I want to know is, when he uses his milk bombs on Morzat at the end of the story, was it real milk or plaster milk? This might have ramifications on the whole "was it an earthquake or plaster zombie attack" debate. Also, was that Milkman refrigerated? Milkmen go bad after a while.
I LOVED THIS WEEK OF WEB OF EVIL STORIES!! EXCELLENT ART ON ALL OF THEM AND FUN. THIS STORY IS A GOOD WAY TO END THE FEST, AND I SEE WHAT YOU MEAN ABOUT CRANDALL MAYBE, SOME OF THE FACES LOOK LIKE CRANDALL FACES, MAYBE HE DID THE PENCILS OR JUST THE INKS?
ReplyDeleteLOOKING FORWWARD TO THE FLASH FORWARD TOMORROW AND WHAT APRIL HAS IN STORE TOO! THANKS AGAIN!
The DaVinci ad is great. I, too, wonder how many broken arms/legs/necks resulted from this!
ReplyDeletePretty slow weekend around here, but I appreciate those of you that did stop by and comment.
ReplyDeleteAs mentioned tomorrow is a Flash Forward Day and Tuesday will of course be the last tale for March 2009, but it may also be the last tale for THOIA for awhile. More news about that tomorrow or Tues...
Aaaah! Say it ain't so, Karswell! I'd be lost without my daily dose of horror!
ReplyDeleteClassic panel on page 5: "Alas! Nevair again will he rrrrrrroll a chompionsheep motch for our bowleeng teem!"
ReplyDeleteNice Story. I think the artist was Jack Kirby.
