Jury of the Undead

From the July 1953 issue of Journey into Fear #14 comes another goofball Iger Shop classic full of sketchy art and giggling death. Today is kind of a double post day as after the story you can follow the bonus link to a spoof of this story (details follow the scans below) along with more info about Michael Price’s upcoming Iger Shop book.

A HEADS UP: As you have undoubtably noticed, the daily posting times here this week have been a bit unpredictable. I'm extemely busy on a variety of work and band related projects at the moment so this may be the norm for most of the month, and possibly next month. Just letting you all know...

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Something else to check out today at the Jan Alan Henderson website, Michael “Forgotten Horrors” Price gives us a sneak peek of his upcoming book about the Iger Shop, featuring info about Jerry Iger, artist Robert Hayward “Bob” Webb, as well as an example of one of their revamped “alteration-effort” comic book stories (a spoof on today’s story in fact), and more.

  1. Ugh. I hate it when the dead laugh at their own jokes.

    Thanks for sticking with it even when you're in the weeds, Karswell. I know this must take a lot of your time, and your efforts are always much appreciated.

  2. If the legal system employed chimps to preside over trials as seems to be the case with the judge in the last panel on page 1, things would be significantly more interesting.

    Indeed, as Mr. Cavin stated better than I could, we greatly appreciate all the voodoo that you do so well. The education you provide on horror comics history alone is worth every "AIEEEEE!" I certainly wouldn't have access to such a collection myself, so many thanks for providing a means of seeing such incredible publications! Still, your faithful minions won't hunt you down like the not-so-dearly-departed judge if life gets in the way. Take it easy, we can understand.

  4. Nice story. I liked the last panel somehow. It is nice when the dead have their fun.

    Keep it relaxed, Karswell :-) As long as Blogger don´t pull your plug like they did on other blogs. As LiveFeed did kill the scan_daily.

    Thanks for the link to the spoof, but (not surprisingly) the original was much funnier. Lots of little touches, starting with the stenographer and bailiff's thought balloons on page one, made me fall in love with this gem right away.

    But here's a thought. Isn't the skeletal judge's choice of decor a little odd? I mean, if you think about it, isn't a bit analogous to a human judge having two severed heads on his bench? You'd think this living skeleton fella would have a little more respect for his fellow bone-buddies. But then, look at that wig he's wearing. He's obviously not even American! Explains everything, doesn't it?

    PS: And because it simply cannot be said enough, worry ye not, Kars! We're all thankful of your great service, WHENEVER you can get around to it, okay?

    I concur with the other mister anonymous. The original is much better. The rewritten version keeps the original storyline, and simply makes the dialogue less realistic.

    If I were rewriting the story to do a spoof, I would have much of the story taking place in a castle (which is what the "prison" looks like), and have the scene with the ghosts to have actually been an attack of the delirium tremens.
