We're sticking with the Comic Media titles for a couple more days, and now we switch to the November 1953 issue of Weird Terror #8 for a knock-out 1-2 combination punch of boxing and—vampires?! If that’s not a bonkers enough concept for you then the typically weird ass, drug-fueled art by Rudy Palais should be.
That story packed a lot of punch! OK, sorry, it's Monday morning... Seriously though, I wasn't expecting Joey to turn into a bat and have the story end and just leave us hanging (like Joey). So now what are they going to do now, put him in the zoo? It's like all these baseball jocks and their steroids; I say let 'em do it and make the game more exciting. Give all boxers doses of bat blood and let the real fun begin!
ReplyDeleteI ALWAYS LOVE THESE BAT SHIT STORIES FROM RUDY PALAIS AND I AGREE WITH BERT, MOST SPORTS ARE SO BORING THAT A LITTLE BIT OF BAT BLOOD SURELY COULDN'T HURT.
ReplyDeleteThought I had this one all figured out as yer bog standard vampire tale ... but when I eventually got to that last panel.. Lol!
ReplyDeleteRudy Palais is king, no doubt about it. Page 1 is diseased.
ReplyDeleteLove this line: "Joey wasn't a genius up where it counted." And then the litany about his woman troubles. Looks like he wasn't a genius "down" where it counted, either.
Ah, well. A perfectly demented tale all around.
So he can go running in the mornings, but light bulbs are too bright for him?
ReplyDeleteThat bat blood sounds like great stuff. It brought back Joey's hair, and judging from his comments on the final page, gave him a boost in the "love" dept. It's Minoxidil and Viagra in one!
One last thing; if drinking the blood of something turns you into that thing (the way it did to Joey) then why haven't Republicans turned into the poor?
Great stuff. I love the macabre voyeuristic splash.
ReplyDeleteInsane but awesome. My favorite in a while.
ReplyDeletereallygood story today
ReplyDeletepalais is kick ass and a obvious influence on the dope comix of the 70s
>Why haven't republicans turned into the poor? I suspect it's a sort of Dracula/Renfield(get yer mind outta the gutter Scarlet Streeters!)thing; the victims are reduced to laughing like idiots and eating rats. What Horror pariah would like to know is; how the hell would a struggling fight promoter come across a book that gives recipes for bat-steroids? Methinks Kirk Langstrom is somehow connected...
ReplyDeleteAnd speaking of blood suckers, did everyone hear that Robert Quarry (aka Count Yorga) passed away on Feb 20th? Dr Phibes sends the sad news... Quarry was also in cult faves like Dr. Phibes Rises Again ('72) , Madhouse ('74), Deathmaster ('72), and Sugar Hill ('74.) For more info here's the Dread Central news bit:

TOMORROW we kick off a 3 day theme of killer ladies... men BEWARE!

ReplyDeleteROFL!!
Boxing and vampires; well, why not?
Okay, I got a black-and-white horror comic in the 70s at a garage sale (I think it was "Vampire Tales," or something, and was formatted like a Warren magazine), and there was a redrawn version of this same story in there.
ReplyDeleteThe layouts were exactly the same (the first panel is unmistakable) but the clothes were updated, and I think there was little more gore in place. Weird!
Jeff, that was almost undoubtedly an Eerie publication.

ReplyDeleteYep, typical Eerie Pub remakes from the 70's. If you're new to THOIA Jeff just check the archives for Eerie Publications, we've been displaying examples of these type stories for a couple years now.
my mom always used to tell me that if i didn't quit eating so many tuna fish sandwichs that some morning i'd wake up and find myself turned into a tuna fish. that's relevant, right?...
