Bernard Baily sells his soul for rock ‘n roll with today’s Time Machine Flash Forward tale, from the March 1974 issue of Witching Hour #40. Plus, the usual assortment of 70’s ads as well as a silly one-pager gag from the always great Manak.

Good story. Did Bailey ever get to draw the Spectre again?.
ReplyDeleteAs Ken Quatro told me when I did that, you are confusing Bernard Baily with Ray Bailey. Bailey worked as an assistant to Milt Caniff in the early forties, after which he tried a couple of newspaper strips of his own. One of those is up at my blog today. After that, he probably returned to Caniff and did assorted comic book assignments in a style that holds midway between this generic style shons here and a sharper style that is sometimes mistaken for the work of Mort Meskin at DC (I have him in Gangbusters) and Harvey (he was in some of their late fifties sf books).

Or maybe he's confusing him with George Bailey of Bedford falls, the richest man in town!
ReplyDeleteCOMIC BOOK STORIES FROM THIS ERA ABOUT MUSIC IN GENERAL ARE ALWAYS SO UNREALISTIC, BUT MAN WOULDN'T YOU LOVE A REAL BAND LIKE THIS? FUN STUFF AND I LOVED THE ART. LOOKS LIKE IT SAYS BERNARD BAILEY TO ME TOO.
ReplyDeleteNEVER HEARD OF THOSE DISNEY TOYS, THEY ARE TOTALLY COOL THOUGH. I REMEMBER THE POSTER ADS, AND AS MUCH AS I'D LOVE A 24 X 29 WOLFMAN POSTER, I THINK I'D PREFER ANY OF THOSE RAQUEL WELCH PRINTS INSTEAD THESE DAYS.
Actually, Kars, it says Bernard Baily. No "e." And this Bernard Baily (who did the "generic(?) style shown here" -- whatever that means) did indeed co-create the Spectre, so I'm not really sure what Ger is trying to say.

Bernard Baily did some of his best and most gruesome work ever in the pre-code era. Love his covers for Mister Mystery, et al. The supernatural theme of this post-Code DC story, good as it is, is pallid compared to the cover picture of Mister Mystery #11, the guy buried to his chin in the desert, and being covered by huge red ants!
ReplyDeleteAs for Ray Bailey, the artist I confuse him with most often is Lee Elias. Bernard Baily's work looks nothing like Ray Bailey's.
The Vampire Midnight Madness Model! I had one of those! I remember walking to the store and not having enough money. But lucky me, on the walk home I found a twenty dollar bill blowing down the street, so I went back and bought it. What a lucky day. I still remember attaching the rubber bands inside it to make it work. Good times.

I was a huge model kit fan too as a kid Mark, unfortunantly I don't remember owning any of these from the Haunted Mansion series. But Disney had another line of somewhat related park ride "Zap/Action" kits based on the Pirates of the Carribean and I had this one:

ReplyDeleteYes, it is the same Bernie Baily from the 50's that did those great horror covers. After he did the Spectre in the early 40's, he opened his own studio with another artist (somebody big, but the name escapes me at the moment) and they did lots of work all around the industry. Briefer worked for that studio, among others -- on an interesting side note, Bernie Baily went on to do "Spawn of Frankenstein" for DC as a back-up in the Phantom Stranger series. Great stuff. Check it out.
So, yes, this is the same guy. You're just spelling the last name wrong (look again at the splash).
Ray Bailey was a very good artist in Lee Elias/Cannif mode (as noted earlier), but he worked mostly in strips. I don't know that he ever did any comic book work, but I could be wrong.
Hope that settles things for you.
The story didn´t do much for me. But this is of course a matter of taste.

I have such fond memories of the Witching Hour. I still have a few saved away. This was a fun nostalgic trip, thanks.

A weird day here at THOIA... and I'm not really even sure what I mean by that. I also liked how some of you played the Lyric Challenge game without even being prompted. Anyway, thanks to everyone who stopped by, and to anyone who finds clocks scary, this is definitely gonna be your weekend.
