Gallery of the Dead

More madness from the November 1952 issue of Journey into Fear #10, as well as one last bite from our 3-Day buffet of Screaming Severed Heads! Plus: Implied mad love with a wax figure! “Cock-A-Doodle-Doo” indeed. Hmm, this tale might actually be the inspiration behind The Real Doll and all of its sad predecessors.

I wonder...

  1. Now that was a strange one. Love it!! It doesn´t makes sense, but this in a good way. :-) Poor Grimmo.

    And thanks for the Absinthe info, Karswell!! I hope this is just a technical snafu and nothing serious.

    How come the "True Tales" quickies are always set in France?

    With a name like Grimmo, you pretty much got your fate mapped out for you, you know?

    Hmm, makes perfect sense to me. After his execution he wants to be turned into a wax figure with his wax love doll so they can "wax on" and "wax off" every night together into eternity. Wacky, I know.

  5. Screaming Severed Heads; yes, I work for a large group of them actually. Just don't tell the doctors I said that...

  8. Fantastic art on this one, especially the splash! And I was getting a little curious watching Grimmo mount his wax love on the bottom of page 3. After the skeleton love fest posted on Kitty's page yesterday, my thoughts have been..shall we say...in the gutter.

    I have a few days off around the holidays, much of that time will be spent trying to catch up on the many older postings! Thanks for the awesome blog, Karswell!

    MAN THIS IS A GREAT ISSUE SO FAR AND I LAUGHED OUT LOUD AT THE COCK A DOODLE DOO PANEL TOO. ITS LIKE THE SCENE IN NORTH BY NORTHWEST WITH THE TRAIN GOING INTO THE TUNNEL, COULD IT BE MORE OBVIOUS ABOUT WHAT TRANSPIRED?

    THANKS FOR THE REAL DOLL LINK TOO, BUT I DONT KNOW IF I[M TURNED ON OR MAJORLY DISTURBED.......PROBABLY BOTH!

    ==========NEWSFLASH===========

    On November 28th, Karswell posted "The Coin of Evil." The artist was not identified, but at the time I thought to myself it looked like the work of Nick Cardy (a suspicion voiced by another reader). So I contacted a friend who knows Nick, and we sent him copies of the story. Today my friend called me to say that he had heard from Nick and that Cardy told him "He thinks he did this story, but couldn't be %100 sure." Inasmuch as this story is 50 plus years old, that's understandable.

    There aren't a lot of guys who could draw as well as Nick back then who also worked in his style. Couple that with Nick's own feeling that he probably did this, I feel comfortable identifying the artist as Cardy.

    Yes, I know. All of you were out there staying up nights wondering about this, but our long blog community nightmare is over. It's morning in THOIA.

  13. The advocate's expression on page six is more gruesome than the boss's on page five.

  15. To this day, I believe Duck Soup would have been a better movie if the boys had let Grimmo have Harpo's part.
