They Called Her a Witch!

It's my opinion that Atlas was definitely The Kings of the short and sweet “filler” terror tale. Need proof? Here’s the first one of the week, and plenty more to come… but it can hardly be called “filler” (or sweet) with such great Russ Heath art and an ending like this!

From the July 1952 issue of Mystic #10

TOMORROW: More wampires and vitches!

  1. Cute. I love the dialog in the last panel. I guess there's no real way to subvert my expectations in just three pages (or seven, normally). In the real world, of course, where there aren't any witches, this would have. But since this is a horror comic....

Any excuse for three pages of gorgeous Russ Heath artwork is good enough for me, though.

    Thanks Karswell.

HARD TO BEAT THE STAN LEE AND RUSS HEATH COMBO, EVEN IN JUST 3 PAGES THEY RULED THE ROCK OF PRE CODE HORROR. THE WITCH FLYING IN THE WINDOW IN THE LAST PANEL IS ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING.......

  4. Speaking of the Fortress Keeper, everyone make sure to check out his blog for lots of great horror posts recently, old and new, golden and silver, it's a super swell mix of terror tales throughout the last half of the century.

  5. Well, I feel solid dumb. I've always assumed the Fortress of Fortitude was a ghost blog, existing only since those days when one had to be a blogger.com user to post comments. That, or that it was a private thing. Either way, I thought there was nothing to see there.

But no. There's a wordpress.com that's been seemingly happening for ages and ages.

I'd probably have been reading this all along, had I known. Now I am very far behind.

Maybe you could put just one post at your empty blogspot address, Keeper, for all the traffic stumbling onto your empty space there. You could link your other site.

I read this story YEARS ago,and it was posted on Scans Daily(which has devolved into a sewer of good and bad,but still worth browsing through now and then.)a few years ago too,in black and white by Paul Curtis.nevertheless,it's great to re-read this one for the art alone, that splash is one of Atlas's very best.

That 3-pager is a CLASSIC. Truly chilling. Makes me proud to be a fan of pre-code horror. :-)

  10. Russ Heath - oh wow. I've become a recent and huge Russ Heath fan thanks to Showcase Presents the Haunted Tank volumes 1 & 2.
The guy was an apt artist!

Michael Golden has a style that's so amazingly similar to Heath's machines, smoke, and shading.

  11. ah! thanks to the plasma, i have my strength back! now i'll just wait here and hope my new girlfriend will make out okay in the woods by herself! then IF she comes back, POW! i'll punch our way out! or just let the vampires come back and kill me when it turns out they're not as big of fools as i take them for!...

this guy believes in taking long chances.

by the way, a great story, almost as great as the three-pager following!
