You Can’t Cheat a Ghost

September is here. Start of a new month and as was used to be the norm we’d kick things off with a full issue. So here comes the January 1953 issue of Strange Mysteries #9 in its entirety for the next four days, overflowing with zombies, skeletons, furry fiends and today’s choice cut o’violent ghost pirates and a bloody good splash.

“Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of died horribly…” ?!!

++++++++++++++++++++++

And since school officially starts for many of you tomorrow, here’s a “Tacky” Public Service Announcement, from Crown Comics #8 (courtesy of Brian Hirsch!) Stay in school, fools!

  4. This is one of my favorite splash panel patterns: stuffing some bloody horror right into my face that the later narrative will go on to act all coy about. It's really brilliant because it leaves me totally surprised by the graphic neck stabbing on the last page.

    Art-wise, I'm iffy on this one. The actual drawing is often quite effective (and less often pretty clean), but the paneling actually began to get on my nerves. I never like things like too many circles or wavy panes or whatever. When used properly, this break with tradition can have a dramatic effect (like with the previously mentioned neck stabbing), but usually they just make me wonder why the artist has decided to employ a new approach--maybe the guy was bored?--and of course that means I'm no longer thinking about the story.

  8. Morning everyone, and Happy Labor Day (Happy "Labour" Day to those narth of the barder.) If you've noticed today's story does not have a GCD link in the intro it's because I haven't been able to get the site to work since I began creating today's post.

    Anyone else experiencing any technical difficulites with it? http://comics.org

  10. Gahhhh. That is a bloody good splash.

    That's why I make it a point never to @##$ around with ghost pirates.

  11. "The Flaming Pirate" sounds to me like the name of some outrageously camp character.

    All that phosphorus can't be good for the complexion.

    Flaming Pirate still flaming.

  13. I have to say, I've been a longtime fan of horror comics (we're talking decades here) and I've seen a lot of stuff, including some Filipino stuff that was pretty damn out there.

    But that splash page made me sit back and blink for a sec.

    Well chosen tale there, Kars.
