I just realized it’s been ages since I’ve posted a Harvey story, so here we go with a good and gruesome Bob Powell head shrinkin’/ decapitatin’ chiller.
I have to say the "tiny head on regular body" thing gives me more giggles than shivers, and the dread incantations seem eerily familiar in places. I like the cursed village, though.
I'd be inclined to put this guy down as another idiot killer. Would you trust an evil talking head from a glorified lucky dip?
Going off-topic, there are a few pre-code horror series free to read online at the Wowio ebook site's comic section, including Adventures Into The Unknown 1-10, Ghost Comics 1-11, some of Nightmare, and quite a few of Steve Ditko's The Thing (The last unfortunately isn't properly listed under Titles, but you can find it with Search or under Horror and Supernatural.) The site's open to people outside the US now, and they've dropped the awkward driving license/credit card ID requirements for signing up.
Bahaha. This was all over the place, and I loved it even if it did run out of steam after Michael died. For sheer entertainment value, my favorite here since the weather turned warm.
TOTALLY CREEPY, LOVE THE SHRUNKEN HEADS AND THE LAST PANEL ON PAGE 7 IS SHOCKINGLY GRAPHIC. THE FIRST ONE ON PAGE 4 GIVES ME THE SHIVERS TOO AS HE'S LUGGING THE BODY AWAY AND BLOOD IS SPILLING EVERYWHERE. THIS JUST REMINDS ME THAT I WOULD LOVE TO SEE MORE HARVEY STORIES.
"Exitir aca dimi!! Ya miyogurt"... is that really a chant to bring a shrunken head back to life, or was the artist trying to tell everyone how yummy his yogurt was??
Cool story, and the art was great- love all the skeltons silhouetted in the moonlight!
Reminds me of the end of "Beetlejuice" where the head-shrinker native does his stuff to Beetlejuice and his head shrivels down. "Hey, this could be a good look for me!"
Now why the hell don't I pick up anything as cool as a talking shrunken head at the auction in the mystery boxes?? I get salt and pepper shakers and those plaster day glow fish you hang in your bathroom. Damn, I need to find a new auction house.
I agree with Absinthe. These kinds of stories set the stage for a lifetime of disappointment. People in comics are always just *accidentally* stumbling across totally awesome swag, and yet I can't even win a lot of vintage movie magazine clippings on eBay. What gives, universe???
The only kinda rites I have any time for are ancient rites.

I like those panel descriptions.
ReplyDelete"...LIKE THE FLAPPING OF A MILLION PETULANT BAT WINGS IN THE FARTHEST CORNER OF HELL!"
I was unaware of the apparent stealthiness of crazed werewolves until I read this.

ReplyDeleteBig thanks to Tim for the link. There goes my free time today! Woo!
ReplyDeleteThanks Tim, the Wowio link is great.
ReplyDeleteTomorrow: more Harvey horror, more Powell, more ancient rites, and the big start of THOIA's August Mummy Mondays theme.

ReplyDeleteGreat stuff.
Okay, the blue shrunken head on the woman's body? TOTALLY creepy.
ReplyDeleteAnd the "PUFFF!" sound effect is made of win. XD
Love this story, the weird head it's from the tribe of Jivaro. Another one is on the cover of Yma Sumac "The Legend of Jivaro" LP.
