House of the Screaming Fiends

Alice Cooper destroys St Louis tonight, so while I attend the ever awesomest flesh and blood show, I encourage everyone else to spend some terror time in another house of screaming fiends, right here…

From the December 1952 issue of Baffling Mysteries #12

  1. "You Fiend! I'll hit you so hard you stab all your own skin off!"

"There's only one way to silence the uncomely agony of these medical victims, Carol--we'll have to burn them all alive!"

"Tomorrow, I'll bury the crime scene so the authorities and families never have closure. Well, I'll hire a crew to do it!"

  2. Wow. That was, uh, different.

I wasn't sure how we got from page six to page seven, but the moral of the story is, six pages of pure sadism is peachy keen so long as you tie a pretty ribbon around it on page seven. Love the variety in this issue. None of the stories really has turned out as expected either.

  5. Wow, this one is fantastic! I love a good mad scientist story, and when you add those freaky freaks in the dungeon, it's a win! (I love the Cyclops and the Baseball Head...however, the Racist Nightmare on the far right [HA!] is a bit iffy...)

The look of the old doctor here is wonderfully weird--I love his hollow eyes with just the sparks in them...if I saw a dude like that, I would soil my cassock, and no mistake.

But in the middle right panel of page 6, why is Creeley screaming "Bob! Bob!" ;)

Finally, the old doctor has to have the best, most nonchalant mad scientist mission statement ever. "It is most instructive and amusing!" That's it! That's all you need to say.

"Vicar, why are you collecting all the neighborhood cats and stockpiling peach preserves?

    "It's instructive and amusing!"

"Vicar, what's this odd apparatus with the latex jackhammer attachement?"

    "It's instructive and amusing!"

"Vic, what's this ratty blue blanket doing in the bathroom?"

    "It's instr...oh. That's my Binky."

    ;)

  6. Oh, and Carol on the Mad Scientist's slab along with several similarly "restrictive" panels in recent entries leads me to suggest another theme week soon...BONDAGE WEEK. Girls tied to tables, stapped to slabs, knotted in nighties, bound to beds...

Why are you looking at me like that? What? Is there something on my face?

  7. Mr. Cavin and the Vicar (damn you early risers!!!) have already gotten the best of the punchlines, but I'll chime in to say that Mad Science is the BEST Science. Another winner, Mr. K!

"NO WONDER PEOPLE IN THE VILLAGE LOOKED AT US SO ODDLY WHEN WE ASKED WHERE IT WAS!"

Yeah, they'd be wondering why anyone would want to live in a house that had three eyes, pointy teeth and tree-beasty things living just outside.

  10. Commonsense stuff, folks: never move into a new home without checking the basement for shifting walls, radon gas, mad doctors and seeping water.

  11. Oh, man! That's about the coolest crib I've ever seen!

    I can feel
    Feel the trees have eyes!

    And... BONDAGE WEEK?

    "Yeah, let's do that!"
    Trash, ROTLD

  12. Great, great horror. Spooky old house, mysterious inheritance, defiant and none-too-crafty hero, misshapen freaks, mad scientist, creepy assistant, babe in bondage about to be horribly mutilated...

This one has it all. *cheer*

  13. Gotta hire Slayer as the house band for today's story- Angel of Death works perfectly:

"Pumped with fluid, inside your brain
Pressure in your skull begins pushing through your eyes
    Burning flesh, drips away
Test of heat burns your skin, your mind starts to boil
    Frigid cold, cracks your limbs
    How long can you last
    In this frozen water burial?
    Sewn together, joining heads
    Just a matter of time
    til you rip yourselves apart"

The artwork really made this one a treasure. More please!!!

  15. Wow, this was Grand Guignol from the first panel! That house, the doctor, the ladies minus their features ... way over the top. Great stuff!

Yowza! Wot an incredible story! Loved the art (and for once the quick & dirty uses of big blocks of color actually help!). This one's a keeper...or maybe just needs a keeper...
