Happy Birthday Eiji Tsuburaya! The man behind some of the greatest monsters and heroes in modern Japanese movie and television history (do I really need to name names?), born this day in Sugasawa City, Fukushima, Japan in 1901 (IMDb says his birthday is actually July 7th but I’ll take August Ragone’s word for it.)
I'd say Patricia Medina would have been perfect for the role of Francine (Wanda Hendrix was a blonde).
ReplyDelete>Wanda Hendrix was a blonde
ReplyDeleteSo was Maila Nurmi (aka Vampira) but that didn't stop her from changing her hair color. In fact I just watched Ride a Pink Horse again recently and Wanda's hair is far from blonde. Also, please comment in the correct post next time, this is the section for Eiji.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY EIJI! HE'S THE MAN SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR MY LOVE OF GIANT MONSTERS, THANK YOU!
ReplyDeleteEven his date of birth is steeped in legend — official sources have often listed that Eiji Tsuburaya was born on July 7th — a date of fortune in the celebration of Tanabata (meaning “Seven Evenings”), a Japanese star festival derived from the Obon (a celebration of ancestors). It is likely that Tsuburaya's birthdate was "moved" to the 7th of July to bring luck upon his name. It seems to have worked, no?
ReplyDeleteWho said no one ever learned anything from Japanese Monster Movies?
Cheers,
August

ReplyDeleteDefinitely brough luck to his name for sure, but no luck to the miniature cities of Tokyo! That's an awesome bit of info August, thank you!
And once again, welcome aboard the LOTT D!
