Jack Cole Tribute, Day Four: First time I ever read this story I initially thought the creep in the splash page had a devil lock, but then I looked closer and realized it was a rip in the page. Still, I like to think that maybe this story somehow inspired The Misfits famous hairstyle.
From the September 1953 issue of Web of Evil #6
Note to self:crooks can recognize anyone even if they're long decayed.
ReplyDeleteI always thought the Misfits' "Devilock" hairstyle had bee copied from the Cramps' Brian Grwgory's ... until now !
ReplyDeleteThe skull in the splash page looks uncannily like some artwork from one of their records !
Jack Cole's tribute ends with a bang , great story and incredible artwork !
Thanks,Kar !
Great week, Steve. I didn't have this one yet...
ReplyDeleteActually the Cole tribute ended with a "sizzle" and the twist ending was excellent.
ReplyDeleteI liked this one--not a knock-out, but a nice comfortable fun tale, lifted a little by the cool allegorical panel at the bottom of pg. 2 (pulling himself up out of the muck of crime!) and the nightmare visitations at the top of pg. 4 ("I'm dead and I hate you...but it wasn't me! Not me either! Nope nope nope!").
ReplyDeleteAnd who is that at the bottom of 5 talkin' to da boss--Andy Capp?
I've really enjoyed this Cole tribute...though not as much as the cheesecake theme week. :) Can't wait to see what's up your sleeve next, Karswell!
OH JACK COLE TRIBUTE, WHAT AN AWESOME WEEK OF THRILLS YOU PROVIDED......WE WILL MISS YOU!
ReplyDeleteHOPE TO SEE MORE FROM COLE SOMEDAY

ReplyDeleteMe too! Basically what you got this week was everything I own from Jack-- for now! Unless you wan to see some Plastic Man stories? Always taking submissions too (hint to Ger!)
So weither you think we went out on a bang, a sizzle, or a fizzle, I hope everyone enjoyed this brief look into the thoroughly deranged, insanely talented mind of Jack Cole.
A jeweler who lives in a cemetery? Or was Davoe in on the ruse, too?
ReplyDeleteAnd they execute you if you take a picture of an execution? Man, that's some tough justice.
A nice double twist at the end, though.
Thanks for the Jack Cole work. It was definitely enjoyable.
A fine tale to end your Jack Cole week. I must say this blog gets better and better all the time, even though it's all relatviely within the horror genre the variety of stories and extras you're providing is staggering. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteBrian
>the variety of stories and extras you're providing is staggering. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteYou're mighty welcome Brian... my ultimate goal for THOIA of course is to stagger the shit out of everyone.
Good one.
