More sad news, Will Elder (1921 - 2008) is gone from this world today too. One of the original artists of Harvey Kurtzman's 'Mad' from its first issue, he later went on to work for Playboy with Little Annie Fanny, also illustrated book covers, movie posters, advertisements for television programs in TV Guide, and more.

GASP IS RIGHT! THEY'RE DROPPING LIKE FLIES NOW.
ReplyDeleteI remember being a little kid and sneaking a look at Little Annie Fannie in an old Playboy... for some reason I found them much more "exciting" than the actual living nude models in the centerfold. Of course times change... but I still give Elder credit for showing me at that early age (through caricature and awesome illustration) why bare flesh can be just as fun and interesting as my Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots.
ReplyDeleteThanks again Will, R.I.P.
Check my blog for a couple of lesser seen Bill Elder pieces... plus one I had never seen before.
ReplyDeleteAWWW man.I actually MET him several times, and came across a fairly recent issue of MAD a while back that had an interview with him.He always seemed so lighthearted and fun,but with a crazy edge, just like his work.gonna read MOLE tonight.
ReplyDeleteElder is a hero of mine, as are most of the original Mad Magazine crew. This is a sad day.
ReplyDeleteVery sad... he was a true great. His "Strop, You're Killing Me" from TALES FROM THE CRYPT was brilliant. Little Annie Fannie was a substantial part of my becoming a horny young man.
ReplyDeleteRIP Will...
