The great Ogden Whitney wraps up our 3-day glimpse inside the May 1952 issue of Astonishing #13 with yet another ultra-spooky, atmospheric Atlas terror tale. FYI to you completists, there are two more stories from this issue that I’ll probably post in the coming weeks, so keep checking back.
I often try to read each of these "handsome young roué runs into trick ending while pursuing wealthy estate" -type stories as if I am coming across them for the very first time, with greater or lesser success. But my, isn't the art in this one excellent.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised that the Stanlee-esque second-person narrator didn't intrude until the second act.
While I would never just outright ask you to even more for me, Karswell, have you considered tagging these with creator credits so that we can more easily reference other stories by the same contributors in you archives? I don't know where to begin looking for more of Ogden Whitney's stuff, assuming this isn't the first one posted.
And that reminds me: I'd like to request more Al Luster if you have the time or materials.
But mostly I'd like to say thanks again.
Ogden Whitney is an artist I've really grown to like, mainly because of Herbie. His basic style is very straight--almost understated--but he has no problem drawing the most outrageous things.
ReplyDelete"You laughed! Oh, how you laughed!"
ReplyDeleteSome of the best art yet, and some effective coloring this time too! Love the detail, the shadows, the yellow of the lantern light and the blue of the darkness behind...fantastic.
Nice twist at the end, too. I was expected family ghouls to rise from the graveyard in vengeance, so I was surprised at the turn it took. Excellent!
EXCELLENT POST!
ReplyDeleteCALVIN, THERE ARE A FEW WHITNEY STORIES IN THE ARCHIVE, I JUST RE-READ THE STRING OF PEARLS STORY WHICH IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES.
>have you considered tagging these
ReplyDeleteI have considered tagging Mr. C but also realize that it's probably going to take me FOREVER to complete. I wish I had thought to do this from the beginning, and like the guy in this story it seems I've dug myself a nice hole, eh?
At the moment I can't remember any other Whitney tales I've posted except (as mentioned by Anon) The Sting of Pearls back in Decemmber:

I'm sure there are more though, or maybe not... if not, I'll be sure to post more in the future.
awesome story! whitney is brilliant
ReplyDeletemore please!!

ReplyDeleteSpeak of the devil MDG, I just noticed in the new Previews Guide that Dark Horse is releasing Herbie Archive Vol. 1, 224 pages, $49.95, on sale in August!
Yeah,i'd always considered Whitney one of those artists who did good composition but average rendering,THEN i discovered his older stuff, man was a genius.
ReplyDeleteI knew all old people were the walking dead. This explains the stench on my great aunt Ruth.
ReplyDeleteVery atmospheric art. Thanks again for the daily treats!
