Here’s another story from Tales of Horror #12, courtesy of comicbook legend Myron Fass. And don’t forget to check out the contest post today on how you too can actually own the comic book containing this story!
From the August 1954 issue of Tales of Horror #12
On page 3, panel 3, the drawing of the woman seems heavily influenced by EC artist Reed Crandall.
ReplyDeleteOH THE TERRIBLE IRONY!! HA HA
ReplyDeleteGood story. Did Fass write it?
ReplyDeleteI'm not that knowledgeable in comics but for me, its the first time I see a cover illustration taken directly from an inside story.
James: according to the GCD link there is no writer credit for this story. And from all the issues of Tales of Horror that I own it seems the cover image is usually identical to the splash of the story inside (also see my Ghost With A Torch post from last month here:

Reed was indeed very influencial!
Karswell: Thank you for taking the time to answer my newbie questions. This use of the splash of an inside story for the cover, was it common for most of the pre-code comics or was it specific to this Tales of Horror series? I used to read the Eerie reprints of these stories in the late sixties-seventies and, with those, the covers didn't even have a link with an inside story.
ReplyDeleteIt went either way James, there's a few other pre-code series that might have used this same image on the cover and splash approach, but yeah, sometimes the cover had very little if nothing to do with the inside stories.
ReplyDeleteWhat a grim,melancholy story,very unusual in that it doesn't involve brutal murder(by Ambrose or his enemies)to justify Ambrose's fate,just a cold,merciless end,for a cold,merciless man.
ReplyDelete>just a cold,merciless end,for a cold,merciless man.
ReplyDeleteWell put HP!

ReplyDeleteInteresting tale. After looking at the initial thumbnails, particularly the one with the coffin being tossed into the sea, I thought the story was going to be a variant of the "criminal hides in coffin only to be buried at sea/creamated/eaten by ghouls" bit, but the actual story was original and very well done.
