Serpent of Doom

If you like watching a woman in nothing but her bra and panties murder her husband with a pillow then this is your lucky day. Pretty risqué for a 50’s comic, but it seems to me that Adventures into Darkness (the series) always found a way to go the extra odd step by adding a little something something to their stories to make them uniquely different than the other publishers. Anyone know for sure if this really is Toth or not? [GCD now seems to think it is John Celardo. -- Nequam]

From the December 1953 issue of Adventures into Darkness #12

  1. Well, I think the snake skin was an improvement. With the right pumps and pencil skirt... ;)

Could be Toth but hard to tell, many of Standard Comics artist's styles look alike to me, and also this story is not listed on the Toth website.

Okay story, the panels you pointed out though are very nice indeed!

  4. My old copy of Overstreet says "Toth art?; lingerie panels" and since this is the only story in the entire issue with a woman in limited dress I guess they mean Serpent of Doom.

Could be Toth, but could also be a hodgepodge, the inking looks like Toth, but some panels look like Crandall,or even Heck or Kirby(the DA's face)it's too sketchy to be all Toth.i'frankly would be wary of anything sold for $5 that was supposedly an ancient relic, hey!maybe thats how the rights for Hammer studios were bought!.

    Hello Karswell,

I've been enjoying your posts for quite some time...thought I would weigh in on wether this art is by TOTH or not...definately not! Besides the artwork speaking for itself, it isn't listed in Jim Vadebonecouer's ultimate TOTH bibliography. TOTH did art in issues #5, #8 and #9 of Adventures into Darkness, but not this issue.

Thanks for the info. I guess that also answers Overstreet's question of "Toth art?; lingerie panels then..."

  9. Doesn't look like Toth to me either, although Mike Peppe may have been involved. It;s a hotchpogde indeed. I see some Heath influences as well. For some reason it has a Stallman vibe to me. Did he work for Standard? He worked for everyone else...
