Are you terrified of tapestries? I didn’t think so… but if you are terrified of being locked in a dark crypt with the living dead then you might find this yarn to be right up your musty mausoleum alley. Also be sure to check GCD for the infamous gory front cover of this issue featuring a decapitated walking corpse returning to claim his evil frozen head.
From the Oct. 1953 issue of This Magazine is Haunted #13
took me nearly an hour to read this one because I'm at work (dont tell the boss!) but this is one is great.....theres moments that look and feel like bernie wrightson especially the zombie and the old dudes face last panel on page 2
ReplyDeleteexcellent story!!!!!
This is alot like Wrightson, but I see some Kamen influence too. Very nice story.
ReplyDeleteWhoever the influence is here, nothing beats a good 'n evil 10 page story that spans the centuries. It's too bad about that last panel though, Dr. Death's comment about a chocolate bar kind of dampens the chill off the trapped / doomed ending.
ReplyDeletePage 2, panel 3 has a definite Jack Davis influence. Page 2, panel 7 has a Wally Wood influence, especially in the shading of the face from light to dark.
ReplyDeleteI love comics but had never seen something quite similar to this. Its great.
ReplyDeleteI BELIEVE THIS IS THE FIRST TIME YOU'VE POSTED A STORY FROM THIS MAGAZINE IS HAUNTED SERIES. HOW WOULD YOU RATE THE SERIES OVERALL? SO FAR I'VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING EXCEPT THIS STORY, AND IF IT'S ANY INDICATION OF THE REST OF THE ISSUES THEN I MIGHT HAVE TO PICK SOME UP.
ReplyDeleteVery cool. If you give a story 10 pages to flesh out the details instead of 4 or 5 then everything has time to properly come together.
ReplyDeleteAnd the cover art is bloody awesome!
Great story!in fact, the best one you've posted this November, not as good as THE HEADLESS HORROR,but still one of the best damn haunted castle stories you've posted so far.i've always wanted to read this series after i saw the covers in a price guide, love the silent panel of the hand emerging, and i gotta say i kinda feel bad for the Bolan's even though it's weird they claim they're not witches but have all that spernatural power to draw on,oh well, and Peter Cushing makes a fine narrator!.

For some reason, Fawcett does not seem to be very well regarded among pre-code horror fans (at least not among those who write about it). Don't know why - maybe it's their much maligned coloring. They're actually one of my favorite publishers. They printed longer stories (3 per issue instead of 4 or 5 and some of them up to 13 pages) which gave them more time to develop a plot/atmosphere. Plus they had Bob Powell and George Evans.
>HOW WOULD YOU RATE THE SERIES OVERALL?
ReplyDeleteLooks like someone answered this question before me, but my two cents is that since I only have two issues of This Magazine is Haunted I'd say it's OK. I have a couple issues each of other Fawcett horror titles like Worlds of Fear, Beware Terror Tales and Strange Suspense Stories, all of which are also just okay. Seems like each issue I have has one really strong story but the rest are just ho-hum. It is possible though that I don't have some of the better issues. And based on current ebay prices I've yet to be convinced to buy any other issues to see if I'm wrong. Which I probably am...
