Nobody could draw murderous monsters of mayhem quite like Bill Everett, and as you can see from today’s post he is equally malicious when it comes to the maniacal Martian menace!
INVASION OF THE WEIRD AND HAIRY FOUR LEGGED POT BELLIED ALIENS! YOUR RIGHT TOO EVERETT SEEMS TO GO OUT OF HIS WAY TO CREATE SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AND OUT OF THIS WORLD, EXCELLENT STUFF!
50's sci-fi is full of "invasion" paranoia... it was bad enough that the government was polluting everyone's minds with the possibility of a war with the "Reds", but then comic books got invaded by the super kooks and we the general public really lost out.
Y'know,Atlas pulled some weird tricks for a twist ending at times, this is exemplary, but still half the fun is getting there, especially with Bill Everett in charge!from the weird splash,to the bottom triple-row,it can't be beat, whats even more amazing is that he was self-taught too.you really do end up wondering if this could happen next morning, creepy.
The thing I love most about Everett is how he illustrates the aliens for horror, not at all how someone would typically draw a sci fi martian. It's like he didn't even give a shit about the sci-fi angle of it all and instead opted for the full blown monster affect instead. Check out One Head Too Many that I posted back on August 16th for another great example of Everett space creeps.
Nice Phillip K Dicklike twist in todays. It's always best when you can't tell who's mad, you or society.
