Happily Dead

Today's story comes from a great issue of Superior Publisher’s Mysteries Weird & Strange, and proves that even after death it's still possible to find true love and happiness. And discrimination. I sure would like to know more about the demented writers and illustrators who worked for Superior back then… anyone have some info?

From the July 1954 issue of Mysteries Weird & Strange #8

What's this world coming to when the dead won't die!!!!! Another weird one. Love knows no bounds.

Love the artwork---somehow reminiscent of Graham "Ghastly" Ingels.

Well, if the dead don't die, or won't stay dead, then we wouldn't have much to post about here on my blog. Actually, the issue that needs addressing is this: "Do the dead die a quality death life to be dead / alive undead?" Trust me, this question makes perfect sense in the crumbling mind of a zombie.

As I was scrolling down and reading this I saw the Carnival of Souls poster and came upon the realization that Happily Dead is very similar to the overall theme of that movie too only this time it's a man going about his daily routine not fully aware he's dead.

Superior used the Iger Shop for most of its art, and even the experts can't seem to identify individual artists except in rare cases. Matt Baker did work for Superior, possibly through Iger, and Jack Kamen may have done some. I don't know how Iger Shop broke up its work, but Iger Shop artists who did horror work for Ajax/Farrell included Carl Burgoss, Robert Hayward Webb, Joe Doolin, Ken Battlefield, L.B. Cole, and maybe Myron Fass.

  8. His girlfriend is pretty hot even if she is a corpse. Now that's quality embalming!

  9. Nice ending. They're not doing anything to anyone, and they get left alone.

  10. Thanks for the Iger Shop info. I seem to remember someone else mentioning this in a previous post somewhere too, I'll have to backtrack and put all of this info together somewhere.

  12. Well, this is a pretty good one, though I can't understand why the doctor would want to report to the *police*. The local medical association would have been my guess.

  13. This was the 50s. They probably thought he was a Commie.

  14. Reminds me of the story by Robert Bloch, where grandpa doesn't believe he's dead either . . . until, while eating, a maggot drops from his lips onto his morning breakfast.
