Junk Man's Treasure

Here's a quick little 3-page tale that wastes no time cutting through the fat and getting right to the gruesome business at hand. From the August 1954 issue of Out of the Shadows #14, this was the final issue from this great Standard Comics series, and though the cover art is so ridiculously close to the cover art from Adventures into Weird Worlds #27 (compare for yourself), it remains one of my favorite comics in my collection. I hope to post a few more stories from this one in the coming weeks.

  3. Love those quick cut endings like this one--- he's now part of the collection! Some illuistrators and writers really knew how to say alot with so little.

  4. Yeah, it's unfortunate when a cover swipe is this blatant... did they really think back then that no one would notice? It's possible they thought their product was so throw-away and expendable that nothing would be remembered one year later let alone discussed and collected 50+ years later. That makes it all even more funny and fascinating.

Man!.I'll say this...it IS straight and to the point(of the axe),and the sneer on the guys face on pg.2 panel 1 is almost Ditko-esque,as for the convenient "damner" scene to make us lose sympathy for Chet, well,my guess is he eats his spinach,or the other guy once was cursed for laughing at Houdini's death.

  6. Yeah, it's not enough that the dude is just a simple thief... he also has to laugh at his chicken shit friend and then accidently kill him while showing little or no remorse about it, then dump the body in the junkyard, then break into someone's house where ultimately he pays the price from the local loon. Ahhhh, deserved retribution! And in just 17 panels / 3 pages too!

  7. Panel 1, Page 2: either Chet has a double who dresses identically to him, or we have a misplaced word balloon.

Also, Danny has apparently undergone an identity swap behen pages one and two. The man with the hat was Danny on Page One.
