The Cursed Casket

Here’s a hot Bob Forgione horror classic to warm up your frigid winter. And don’t you just love stories about careless scientists that almost destroy all of mankind by unleashing an evil ancient fire spirit?

From the October 1953 issue of Forbidden Worlds #22

For Tony, who posted yesterday on full issues he'd like to see:

In case you haven't checked out the link on this page, the Golden Age Downloads site has a few copies of most of the titles you mentioned. Probably about 20-25 total issues. All are complete (and most with ads and covers too).

I HAVEN'T HAD MUCH LUCK WITH THE GOLDEN AGE DOWNLOADS SITE, MAYBE I'M DOING SOMETHING WRONG BUT I CAN'T EVER GET ANYTHING TO DOWNLOAD FROM THERE PROPERLY. KARSWELL'S BLOG IS MORE FUN ANYWAY.

Thanks! And yes, the Golden Age Downloads site seems like a great source for complete issues... you're not the only one I've heard say they've had troubles downloading from there. I've never really even tried downloading anything myself as I have enough in my own collection and new stuff constantly coming in to keep me busy.

I'm the 4th person to leave a comment here but the 1st person to even bother commenting on todays awesome story! Bob Forgione is one of my favorites and this is an excellent fast paced horror entry. His work for ACG just amazes me.

Really good story, love the design of the monster, and with a nice strategic ending, even though i thought it would involve the Flame Spirit he worshipped.

  8. The "monster" was original, and the plotting was well-paced. The art was nicely rendered, and had some memorable images! Thanks for sharing this story, Karswell!

  9. This reminded me of the literary Dracula, when the gypsies are transporting his casket and the vampire killers are trying to catch them before sunset, but reversed! This creature is great, like a flame vampire. Awesome.

Also, there are a lot of f'ed up details in the art work here--like the woman kneeling on fire on page one, the girl's crazy bird-hat-shadow-thing on page 3, and her oddly seductive pose while talking about the creature on page 5. What the hey?

    Great stuff! This blog rocks!
