Time for an atmospheric Bob Powell / Howard Nostrand classic from Harvey today as we continue along on our Week of Weird Women stories. GCD calls this a “parody” of Wuthering Heights, although aside from changing one letter in the title, labeling it "A Boo of the Month” (and the 3 center panels on page four) I’m not really sure what else about any of this actually qualifies as a parody.
From the August 1954 issue of Witches Tales #26
NOT REALLY A PARODY AT ALL I AGREE........A TRUE PARODY WOULD BE CRACKING JOKES ALL OVER THE PLACE LIKE MAD MAG WOULD DO. ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT THE ENDING?
ReplyDeleteSTILL A COOL STORY WITH A NEAT TWIST AND EXCELLENT ARTWORK. I LOVE STORIES SET ON A DARK WINDY NIGHT OUT ON THE MOORS.
definitely more horror than parody. the 3 panels on page 4 you mention seem totally out of place with the rest of the story like suddenly they remembered this was all supposed to be funny. other than that though typically solid, powell and nostrand can do no wrong in my book
ReplyDeleteTCM is airing William Wyler's Wuthering Heights ('39) on Sunday morning Dec. 23rd if anyone is interested in seeing the most beloved version... stars Lawrence Olivier and gorgeous Merle Oberon.
ReplyDeleteWell, aside from the names,it isn't a parody of WH,but still an excellent story, appropriate you posted the Matheson thing;parts were reminiscent of PIT & THE PENDULUM(Niiicholasss)and Price and Lorre woulda been great as Heatcliff and the vampire,so this story reaches HEIGHTS of greatness!.
ReplyDelete>Price and Lorre woulda been great as Heatcliff and the vampire
ReplyDeleteAnd if Vincent Price couldn't have made it I suppose Ray Milland would have been just fine in the role too.
Wonderful, only a parody in the loosest sense, but still a very cool twist on the novel. I love how the spell checker doesn't like Wuthering and suggests Withering; it must be a horror-comic fan!
ReplyDeleteand the art in that 3rd to last panel-- chilling!
ReplyDeleteWhoops! Poor Heatcliff broke the cardinal rule about vampires--don't invite them in.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Vincent Price and Peter Lorre in those roles would have been great.
