Dell Movie Classic: The Mummy (Part One)

It sounds like some of you are chomping at the bit for the Dell Movie Classic #537 version of The Mummy (Sept / Nov 1962), so instead of waiting until next weekend like I had planned, how about we just dig into the evil sands today and untomb part one? A typically great painted cover kicks it off, (obviously modeled after Lon Chaney's make-up design as The Mummy in the Universal sequels to the original Karloff classic) but as usual, this is where any similarities between the films and the Dell comic version end. And as mentioned in our previous post, the art inside is by the great Jack Sparling.

I've long wanted to read this comic book. Thanks for posting it, and I anxiously await the next installment. It's not what I expected.

Jack Sparling's artwork is typical for this period, solid if not inspiring. His scratchy finish meshes well with this material.

I love Sparling's art in this one. There was something about the way he drew faces that always suggested moral/physical decay and corruption. Perfect for topic at hand, to be sure! I get the impression he was giving this assignment a bit extra. - a bit more of the Sparling fleshiness. Look forward to part II.

It never ceases to amaze me how these ancient, undead Egyptians are perfectly capable of understanding, and speaking, the English language.

Part two is coming up... as with most Dell Comics, it's a BIG issue and takes a while to scan, color correct, adjust etc. I appreciate the 5 comments though.
