The Mirror / Sticks and Stones

Let's warm-up today first with one from Fiction House Magazines' Monster #1 (1953) ...it's a nightmarish little tale with a downbeat ending and great legs (GCD claims "story contains some Milt Cannif Dragon Lady swipes as well as some good girl art swipes that look like they came from Blue Beetle..."), followed by an even warmer Atlas shocker from the July '52 issue of Advs into Weird Worlds #8.

Well, those were 2 little cheerer-uppers.

"The Mirror" would be a really good story if not for the hopelessly muddled storytelling (especially on Page Two -- had to read it twice to figure out where to read next). Still, love the ending.

And "Sticks and Stones" was saved from utter mediocrity by that insane climax. It's amazing how often normal, lovable girls suddenly turn into sadistic psychotics almost instantaneously in pre-code comics.

As usual, gorgeous samples again! Somebody at Dark Horse or Fantagraphics needs to reprint these treasures!! Thanks again for sharing.

Last few stories bring to mind All Women Are Bad by The Cramps! LOL

Sticks And Stones was a change of pace, though. Guys like that who sent women I've known, er, "playing for the other team"...

>All Women Are Bad

Ahhh, someone's detecting the theme... not like it isn't totally obvious, but still.

And say, how come no one reminded me that last Sunday was THOIA's b-day?!!

What a great cartoon. Not only does it have a moral to the story but he gets his come upperence in the end. Excellent.
