And here my fiends, we witness the secret origin of Talky Tawny. I really liked the panel on the second-to-last page of him pursuing the witch doctor, nice use of shadows. As for the ad's...I wonder if those binoculars might belong to Michael Gough by any chance?.
HOLY CRAP at that splash page image! However, classic false advertising. They ask "Can a tiger's bloody fangs and bullet-pierced head be attached to a man's corpse?" I guess the implied answer is "No, not really." :) A shame--I was really hoping for a pair of Invasion of the Body Snatchers-style man/animal abominations like the ones pictured there.
Still, the basic plot of the story is a chiller--sentenced to die again and again as the beasts he'd previously hunted, every hunter's nightmare. And perhaps a literary allustion to the myth of Actaeon and Diana? No? Okay.
The transformation to antelope is a real winner, and the aforementioned shadowed panel at the bottom of pg. 5 is nice too. However, after the cool beginning and middle, I was expecting more than the non-ending we get here. Still, worth it, if just for that splash!
Fave quote: "I'm a dead man, *AND* a ghost tiger!" It's two, two, TWO treats in one! ;)
Last panel on page 4, "I was only a witchcraft pig... now I am a human again" is a pretty good 'n stupid thing for anyone to say. Of course laughing in the face of a jungle curse and shouting "Mumbo-Jumbo! Balderdash!" is also a total fate sealer.
Also, the 3rd Dimension Fairy Tale ad is a reminder about the My Bloody Valentine in 3D remake that opens in theatres this weekend. Love the original, I'm sure this new version won't come close but has anyone ever seen a splatter film in 3D? I mean, I've seen Creature from the Black Lagoon and the original House of Wax in 3D, but the closest thing I can think of to more modern horror is JAWS 3D. MBV3D might be fun. If anyone sees it let us know what you thought.
Fave line: "That striped shadow can't be a tiger..." Decent art, anyway.
I want to check out MBV 3d, myself. LOVE the original! Only splatter film I ever saw in 3d was Friday 13th Part 3, but I don't recall it being in "real" 3d, so to speak.
I think punching a witch doctor after ridiculing his beliefs is definitely a way to put you into the "most doomed character" category! Right up there with the arrogant relic hunter and the guy who picks on circus freaks.
I love stories where game hunters get their righteous comeuppance. And man, those spikes at the end...ouch!
Is it me or do the natives look a little too African for India?
And thanks to the Vicar for yesterday's links to funny tombstones!
THIS ONE REMINDS ME OF SOMETHING FROM STANDARD COMICS, THE ART KIND OF HAS THAT TOTH TOUCH A LITTLE. COOL, MORE FUNNY THAN SCARY BUT ALSO MORE WEIRD THAN ANYTHING!
ONE CHARACTER MAYBE MORE DOOMED THAN A BIG GAME HUNTER IS THE MURDERING MONEY HUNGRY SPOUSE, OR AS YOU'VE POINTED OUT MANY TIMES THE GUY WHO THINKS GETTING BURIED ALIVE AND THEN DUG UP LATER FOR THE INSURANCE MONEY IS A GOOD PLAN. DOOMED!!!!
i'm a dead man and a ghost tiger and a witchcraft pig so yes, i can multi-task. i also babysit on the weekends and have a paper route! here's my card...
I just saw MY BLOODY VALENTINE today, Karswell. And(everyone drops dead)i actually enjoyed it fairly well!. It wasn't great and definitely not superior(the heart-in-a-box scene is done rather poorly.)but don't go in expecting much and you'll leave fairly satisfied. The big problem is that it tries to set up a mystery as to the killer's identity where the solution is so incredibly obvious it hurts, then tries to throw out a red-herring at last minute only for everyone's assumption to be--well i'm not gonna give it away for those interested but you'll see it coming anyway unless you consider SCOOBY DOO to be the peak of detective fiction. original:***1/2 stars. Remake:***. Anyway, it's better than that lying son-of-a-bitch's remake of HALLOWEEN but not up there with THE THING('82) and HUNCHBACK('39) remakes.
I saw it today and liked it too. It's not flawless by any means, but definitely had some great moments (usually those involving blood, and of course boobs.) Very recommendable to fans of 80's style slasher/splatter films, and definitely see it for the incredible 3D effects. This ain't yer daddy's 3D!

This reads like a Babelfish translation. At least it isn't heavy-handed in making its point.
What's everyone's favorite quote?

So, I thought I got a sort of vague, subtle feeling of "hunting is bad" from this one.

I saw that one at the drive-in so the "3D" angle didn't count for me either.
