Or; Attack of the Mushroom People as it is more commonly known on our side of the planet. I’m posting this trailer to compliment today’s pre-code horror tale which is also about a group of people trapped on an isle of terror. Many blogs have been reviewing Matango lately with varying opinions, but despite the silly sounding premise I personally think it’s one of the best Japanese horror films ever made. See for yourself…

My favorite non-kaiju J-horror besides RINGU.
EXCELLENT TRAILER TO POST WITH TODAY'S STORY. SUCH A COOL SPOOKY MOVIE, I WAS ACTUALLY THINKING OF IT WHILE READING DREAD ISLAND.
Yes, Mantango is a personal favorite!
Love that movie. I own a bootleg DVD copy, but would really like to obtain the official DVD release.

You may notice the atrocious English dubbing in the trailer, if you haven't seen Matango yet try to watch the subbed Tokyo Shock version. It's also available in the "TOHO 3-PACK" with The Mysterians and Varan. All highly reccomended!

It's like Gilligan's Isle had they landed on one inhabited by giant sentient muchrooms!
I haven't watched it yet, but the Internet Archive's got a copy of Matango.
I have read the WH Hodgeson story it's based on. (And found it a little ucky for even my robust tastes. ;P )
Kumi Mizuno looks so good in this movie, and Yoshio Tsuchiya gets to act while clutching her behind! too much! AND it's scary!
