Lost Metropolis Footage Found

Lost footage from the silent sci-fi classic Metropolis has been discovered in Argentina. The director's cut of Fritz Lang's 1927 film, featuring an extra 30 minutes, was believed to have vanished forever after it was cut by Paramount bosses because of bad reviews. However, the curator of the Buenos Aires Film Museum discovered a copy of the movie in his archives - and a projectionist noticed it was longer than all other versions of the iconic film.

Film restorer Martin Koerber, who is one of the few people to see the lost footage, says, "No matter how bad the condition of the material may be, the original intention of the film, including all of its sub-plots, is now once again tangible for the normal viewer. The rhythm of the film has been restored."

Thanks to Dr. Phibes for sending THOIA this astounding news!

Not only is this great news, but like HP says, just think of the possibilities of lost films discovered and missing footage found. There is always hope. It is amazing to me the stuff that is out there that people don't even know they have. Wasn't there some test footage of Lugosi as Der Golum?

The missing footage is of Lugosi as the Frankenstein monster. A few years ago, someone claimed to be in possession of it, but that story seemed to go nowhere. Meanwhile (speaking of the Frankenstein monster), I would note that, after many years of being thought lost, footage was found of Charles Ogle as the monster in the very first Frankenstein film (1910).

"no matter how bad the condition of the material may be..." I will probably still enjoy it, because it's such a beautiful movie to look at.

London After Midnight is the one I'm waiting for... even though it's supposedly not very good as a movie (whatever) you can't deny those frightening photos of Chaney with the rings around his eyes and those teeth! I'm surprised someone like Tim Burton hasn't just gone ahead and re-shot a new version of it based on the script or the restoration version they air on TCM from time to time.
