I REMEMBER THE PREVIOUS DISCUSSION AND AGREE WHY CAPTIVE WILD WOMEN? ALSO THIS SET HAS THE BLACK CAT VERSION STARRING LUGOSI AND BASIL RATHBONE, ITS NOT THE KARLOFF VERISON IN CASE ANYONE WAS CONFUSED

My 2 cents:

I think this collection is ok. It is a little light on the scares. As mentioned, The Black Cat is not the earlier version with Lugosi/Karloff. It's ashame it has the same name, because the Lusogi/Karloff version is so far superior it really isn't fair to compare the two. This Black Cat is a murder mystery surrounding the reading of a will. Lugosi doesn't even have that big of a role. I did have a couple of laughs from this one. At one point, Basil Rathbone's character guesses at the identity of the murderer. This causes one of the guests to reply, "Look who thinks he is Sherlock Holmes." The other big laugh I got was when Lugosi's character is acting suspicious, loading a mysterious sack into the back of a carriage late at night in the rain. When he is confronted, he begs them not to open the back of the carriage. But they do and about 40 cats take off running. Lugosi gets upset 'cause he has to round them all up again. I don't know why, but the idea of Bela rounding up 40 cats at midnight in the pouring rain is hilarious to me.

Horror Island goes more for laughs. It is a who dunnit centered around a hidden treasure in an old house on an island. To me, this has the feel of an Abbott and Costello film.

Man Made Monster is a fun film, sort of a Frankenstein knock off. Lon Chaney Jr. is turned into a electrically charged man by evil scientist Lionel Atwill. You never really fear Chaney's character. You actually feel sorry for him. Again in my opinion, many similarities to the first Frankenstein film.

Captive Wild Woman has John Carradine in the evil doctor role. Carradine puts human glands into a Gorilla who transforms into a mysterious woman. I have to admit, I always find the Gorilla costumes in the early films real cheesy. It makes it difficult for me to enjoy these types of movies.

I think Night Monster is the creepiest of the set. Lots of moody atmosphere, dark, foggy country roads, etc. One particular creepy effect was the way all the night time animals sounds (frogs, crickets, etc.) would suddenly go quiet in the middle of the night when someone would be walking a road alone.

I got this set for $17.99. You can't go wrong at that price, just don't expect a lot of chills.

Don't pay the inflated Amazon dealers prices. This is a Best Buy exclusive and can be purchsed from them for under $20.

There were alot of cheap / used copies of this in Amazon marketplace this morning when I first posted this, now they're suddenly all $28 and up... so yeah, try Best Buy or half.com

And thanks to Dr Phibes for the informative review, and for unintentionally calling Bela "LUSOGI!" ha ha... you getta "la soggy" from a'running around in the rain and a'tryin' to catch'a the kitty cats.

When you stop to consider my face has been destroyed in a fiery car accident, it's surprising I don't make more typos. Perhaps if I dictated to Vulnavia......
